The minimum wage in Norway is becoming more common. Agricultural workers, electricians and workers in the fishing industry are the new professional groups to which the expanded minimum wages apply. In contrast, collective agreements that are not affected by the universal minimum wage are continually updated as a result of negotiations between trade unions and employers’ organizations.
The minimum wage in Norway applies in selected industries, particularly those with high demand for foreign workers. The purpose of the minimum wage is to prevent foreign workers from being underpaid in comparison to native Norwegian workers. On the other hand, the minimum wage’s intention is to stop Norwegians from moving away from less popular professions, especially those physically demanding. The regulations apply to both skilled and unskilled workers in selected industries. Since 2019, further groups of employees have been included in the minimum rates.
