The employers posting workers to Sweden or using the local personnel must prepare for the changes concerning ID06 cards. The documents are crucial to be able to run e.g. building and construction projects.
Due to Swedish tax legislation that was improved in 2016, every building site in Sweden must have an Electronical Identification System that tracks all employees at the site. There are numerous providers of such identification systems, but ID06 is definitely the the most common provider in Sweden.
Starting January 12, 2026, ID06 will introduce stricter regulations for issuing ID06 cards to enhance security and trust in the system. All applicants, regardless of nationality, must verify their identity using a passport or national ID card. This requirement also applies to Swedish citizens, who previously had the option to apply using an eID solution.
ID06 cards are crucial for all foreign building companies who are posting workers to Sweden.
At the moment ID06 cards follow different regulations depending on the country of origin, according to EU regulations and Swedish law. As a result, sometimes it is difficult to determine a person’s citizenship and which decide rules apply. Previously, eID solutions like BankID could be used for applications, but these lack key information such as citizenship and a photograph, leading to uncertainty in the verification process. Under the new rules, a valid physical identification document will be required.
To streamline the process, ID06 has developed a mobile application, ID06 Identify, which allows users to scan their passport or national ID card using their smartphones. This ensures that only authentic documents are accepted, preventing fraud and identity misuse.
The updated ID06 regulations are a major step towards preventing identity fraud and illegal labor, ensuring a safer and more transparent labor market in Sweden.
